I try to look for the highlights and emphasise them a little. Shadows and reflections, especially in water, often inspire me. Being a little colour blind means I see shades more strongly and I try to take advantage of this. I look to generate an emotional response and am happy to be provocative. I just enjoy experimenting with subjects and with ways of mixing and layering colours on and off the paper and I am not wedded to any particular style or medium. My view is that an artist needs to be competent at representational work to successfully reproduce what is in the mind’s eye. At the outset, I usually have a clear idea of the picture I am trying to achieve, although this is not a rigid plan and I am often surprised!
