Michael Norcross

Michael’s paintings and prints are drawn from a variety of carefully selected subject matter represented in considered, compositions. They are developed initially from small direct observational painted studies. These can focus on the compositional structure of the scene or the sensation of being in a particular place, or both taking the form of visual or written notes. Videos are sometimes recorded at the scene to use as aid memoires or to post on Instagram. The composition of elements observed, a time of day, a particular kind of light, mood, atmosphere are combined through observation, recording, imagination, vision to recreate a celebration of the moment on a larger scale back in his Caversham studio. Paintings include landscapes and imagery from the countryside, as well as others from his immediate vicinity such as local parks with sometimes more complex darker narratives, where nature collides with man.

Exhibitions include: Cheltenham Museum, Glaxo Laboratories, The Royal Academy, Camden Art Centre, Rowland Browse and Delbanco (now Browse and Derby) Cork Street, The Heart Farnham, Insight Gallery, The Corn Exchange, Arlington Arts Centre, The SW1 Gallery Westminster, The Turbine Hall, Reading Museum, Studio 21, The Rare Skills Gallery, Galeria Moderna, Cambridge, and most recently The Royal Society of British Artists Annual Exhibition, the Mall Galleries.
