Rebecca Mendoza

initially studied Fine Art at Epsom School of Art. I then gained a PG Diploma in Architectural Glass at Central School of Art. I then gained a Certificate of Education (for Higher Education) from Roehampton Institute and, after teaching Glass for several years in Further & Higher Education in London, I undertook an MA in ‘The Theory and Practice of Public Art ‘ at Chelsea School of Art and Design. A few years later I gained a 2nd MA, in ‘Glass’, from Sunderland University. I subsequently undertook 3 years full-time study of the nude and representational drawing at Hatahana School of Figurative Art in Tel Aviv.

I am passionate about drawing and only use dry media and categorise myself as a pastel painter. My preoccupation currently is with the exploration of the qualities of light, reflection, shadow and air and the manifestation of these onto a two dimensional surface. I am enthralled by the transience, translucence, hues and strata of sky and air and in representing these on paper I want the viewer to look up and engage in a visual experience, not walk with head down engrossed in a device, unaware of, and disconnected from, their surroundings. My work often contains representations of human interruption in our field of vision – electricity cables, phone wires, plane trails and headlights – interruptions that are so familiar they have become an integral feature of the contemporary landscape.

My studio is in Windsor (Prime Studios).
