Picture of the Month for July 2025 is Chania Lighthouse by Calina Lefter. It was chosen from the Members Gallery by Jo Lillywhite.

The layers of colours and marks attracted me to this painting. It’s the sort of work that you could see something different in, each time you look at it.  

It also reminded me of holidays and warmer climes.  Having visited Chania in Crete, it took me right back there to this ancient harbour and happy times. 

I was also interested in the mediums used to create it – mixed media including walnut ink which was new to me!  It’s such an effective technique and I like her delicate approach to the layers of sunset colours against the strong form and lines of the lighthouse structure.
