RGA Friday

Gel Plate Printing & Collage

Tutor: Janina Maher

25th October 2024
7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Cost Per Person: RGA Members - £8
Non-RGA members - £12

Gel plate printing is a process for making unique monoprints pulled from a gelatine-like base plate. It is a very fast and easy process and is extremely addictive!

During the workshop we will make a series of prints on white paper and on black paper using the gel plate and will use these for two collage projects: black line collage, and the 5 by 5 collage challenge.

There will be additional cost of £3 payable to the tutor on the day (cash please) to cover other materials used on the workshop. This includes black paper and card, thick paper for collage substrates, deli paper, wet strength tissue paper, decorative scrapbook and decoupage papers, washi tape, magazines for collage images, use of stencils and mark making tools.

What to bring:

  • Table covering
  • Apron
  • Gel plate. Recommended brands are Gel Press or Gelli Arts and Janina’s preferred size of plate is 8” by 12”. If you don’t have a gel plate then you can borrow one on the day. Janina will also have a few available for sale. Please contact Janina in advance if you would like to borrow or buy one. If you want to buy one ahead of the workshop the two main brands that work well with acrylic paint are Gel Press and Gelli Arts.
  • Acrylic paint – 6 to 8 tubes of acrylic paint in autumnal colours and including white and one metallic colour. The Pebeo and Hobbycraft brands work well and are a reasonable price.
  • Roller (or brayer). The 4 inch size works well with a gel plate 8” by 10”. Janina will have a few spare brayers to borrow.
  • Paper – 5 or so sheets of white printer weight paper to print on.
  • Pencil and scissors.
  • Glue – PVA or acrylic mat gel medium or glue stick.
  • Glue brush and water jar.
  • Any images you want to work from. Simple graphic shapes such as a still life, or autumnal flowers would work well.
  • Baby wipes, kitchen towel.
