Picture of the Month for September 2025 is Back from Market by Jane Eustace. It was chosen from the Members Gallery by Sue Bridge.

I have chosen Jane Eustace’s ‘Back from Market’ as I find it a very atmospheric piece, provoking memories and mood which makes a connection with me. Perhaps it’s the long walk home which resonates with me or the determination of the figure making her way back at mid-day. I also love the flamboyant, bright red umbrella, which draws the eye and makes a focal point in the composition.

The painter has successfully conveyed the heat of the day, and there is a sense of movement in both the trees and foliage. Compositionally, I love the off-centre linear quality of the palm trees, which leads the viewer in. Light and wind are captured in loose brushstrokes on the vegetation and umbrella.

I am drawn to this painting because I can feel it! Jane has captured the essence of a particular moment in time and conveyed a real sense of place in her painting.
